You Got Into an Accident While in Your RV. Here’s What to Do Next.

An accident is stressful under any circumstances, but dealing with a collision involving an RV can present some additional challenges. Whether you were driving your RV on the highway, leaving a campground, or you were parked at your designation, knowing what to do after an accident can help protect your safety and make the insurance claims process easier.

1. Make Sure Everyone is Safe

Your first priority after an RV accident should be the safety of everyone involved. If you can safely do so, move the RV out of traffic and turn on your hazard lights. Check yourself, your passengers, and anyone else involved in the accident for injuries.

Call 911 if anyone is injured or if emergency assistance is needed. Even if the accident seems minor, having law enforcement respond can provide an official report of what happened. Avoid admitting fault or making statements about who caused the accident. Stick to the facts when speaking with the other driver and responding officers.

If the RV is carrying propane, fuel, or other potentially hazardous materials, be especially cautious if you notice a leak, smoke, or a fire risk.

2. Document the Accident

Once everyone is safe, gather as much information about the accident as possible. Exchange contact and insurance information with the other driver, including names, phone numbers, insurance companies, and policy information.

Take photos and videos of the accident scene, including damage to the RV, other vehicles, nearby property, and surrounding road conditions. If there were witnesses, ask for their contact information. Write down what happened while the details are still fresh in your mind.

3. Contact Your Insurance Company

Notify your insurance company about the accident as soon as reasonably possible. Your insurer can explain what information and documentation you’ll need to provide and walk you through the claims process.

Don’t assume that your RV can simply be driven away from the accident scene. If it isn’t safe to operate, ask your insurance company or roadside assistance provider about towing options. Your RV policy may include roadside assistance or other helpful coverage.
